Riparian Habitat: Healthy Riparian Habitat is Complex

Complex is good. Fish benefit from complex riparian areas that become flooded at high flows because the vegetation slows floodwaters down and provides safe places for young and juvenile fish. Wildlife benefits because complex riparian areas have more habitats than simple ones, and the more habitats you have, the more places wildlife can feed, mate, hide, and rest. But what does "complex" mean when you are talking about riparian areas? It means two things: structural diversity and species diversity. Click on the images below to learn more.

Riparian Habitat: Healthy Riparian Habitat is Complex

We know what high quality riparian habitat looks like. It is diverse. It includes an overstory of large mature trees, a diverse shrub understory, and meadows of forbs, sedges, and grasses. It is expansive, occurring on undeveloped floodplains connected to the river. The shrub understory often forms dense thickets. And the plants are native. These characteristics mean the riparian zone will provide shade, food and water; escape, hiding and resting cover; breeding and rearing habitat; and travel routes for literally hundreds of wildlife species. Up to seventy-five percent of western Montana's vertebrate species depend upon, or utilize, riparian habitat.
