Living Sustainably With the River and the Community of Life It Supports

Living In This Place for Millennia

When we gather anything from the land, we give something back. It's like we trade for something. We thank our Mother Earth…give something back…that's your thanks. Pat Pierre, Pend d'Oreille Elder

Human lives are short, and often our perspectives on the world are too. It's important to remember that people have been living on the Jocko River for many thousands of years and that it's only been in the last one hundred years that human activities have so altered the river that some of its fish and wildlife are now threatened. Living sustainably with the river and the community of life it supports is possible—the Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai Tribes have shown that. It requires an in-depth knowledge of the river and its functions. Most importantly, it requires being respectful and conscientious in our actions and giving back as much as we take. Each generation has the sacred responsiblity of passing on to the next a river in as good or better condition than they received.
