Fish: Species Profiles

One hundred and fifty years ago, just three members of the trout family lived in the Jocko River—bull trout, westslope cutthroat trout, and mountain whitefish. That changed when non-Indian settlers arrived. They introduced brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout, and now all three species thrive in wild, self-sustaining populations that threaten the natives. Other fish native to the Jocko River include three minnows—the northern pikeminnow, longnose dace, and redside shiner; two suckers—the longnose and largescale; and one sculpin—the slimy. Together, these twelve species make up the fish fauna of the Jocko River. Click on the thumbnails below to learn more about them.
