By realigning the channel to the river's historic channels, habitat complexity is restored along with stream function. Instead of just riffles and runs, there are riffles, runs, glides, and pools. The channel is more stable—able to transport flows and sediments without aggrading (the channel bed building up from sediment deposition) or degrading (the channel bed eroding downward).
